Whenever a manufacturing company makes the claim that it’s product could be useful for the treatment of a disease or an addiction, for example nicotine addiction, then it will have to provide studies to the relevant FDA committee to show that the product is effective and safe for that use. Based on these studies, the FDA then will approve or disapprove the product. So far as is known, to date there are no big, high quality studies available yet that are looking at e-cigarettes and whether they can be used to reduce or stop smoking longterm. Most of these studies have sofar been only very short-term (six months or less) and the participating volunteers have not been randomly assigned to the various methods to quit their smoking habit, including e-cigs. Many of these studies have been based only on the self reported usage of e-cigs.

We know that the advantages of vaping do outweigh the risks. Because vaping seems to be the first real way of helping smokers to quit smoking. E-cigs were first introduced just as another tool to assist smokers to give up smoking. They were never marketed at non-smokers, they are not marketed at younger teens, but they are essentially marketed at folks who want to quit their smoking habit.

Vaping is ideal for allowing you better control over the amount of nicotine that you get, and the e-liquid you choose as well as the vaping device will help you decide how much nicotine you would like to use. Nicotine in e-liquid is measured as mg/ml, and so different concentrations provide a variety of experiences. Remember though, that increasing the nicotine levels can also increase the health risk. If it says 0mg/ml then that means there is zero nicotine in the e-liquid. Rather than welcoming the vaping products as a possible method to get many smokers to quit smoking, many anti-smoking groups have continually attacked vape products in a bid to discourage smokers from quitting by starting to use them. This is unfortunately so contrary to all the principles and practices of public health and has caught the attention of vapers who continue to be perplexed by this crazy response from public health.

While there are not a lot of quantitative studies available to prove the effecacy of e-cigs when trying to quit smoking, an interesting trial recently published found that e-cigs can be just as effective as nicotine patches for those wanting to quit smoking. Unfortunately though, the e-cigs used in the test were first generation products and so they did not deliver the nicotine content very well. It is therefore possible that the more advanced products that are now available could eventually surpass nicotine patches in their efficacy.

As a general rule of thumb, most medical doctors claim that the inhalation of any kind of chemical is not a good idea. The smoking cigarettes however, is so harmful to your health that vaping (in spite of its chemical ingredients) is relatively safer in comparison.

In a recent report, as mentioned at, an expert panel concluded that the evidence available to date suggests that, e-cigarettes do have some health risks but they are far less likely to be harmful than normal cigarettes. Most vaping devices have fewer and lower levels of the toxic substances in them that conventional cigarettes contain, and the use of e-cigs may assist most adults smokers of conventional cigarettes to give up smoking. However we do know that the longterm health effects of e-cigs are not yet entirely clear.

It seems likely that decreased daily consumption of all conventional cigarettes that has been seen among e-cig users in some published studies, could at least be partially due to the psychological element that involves a smoker’s motivation to kick the habit.

Further support for this idea can be seen in a recently published study in Hawaii, which involved 1567 conventional smokers, 13% of which were also e-cig consumers that were attempting to give up smoking. The survey showed that those smokers using e-cigarettes as a tool to stop smoking were a lot more determined to want to stop smoking, than smokers that never used e-cigs. Additionally, e-cigs were also seen as a good alternative option to other FDA devices that are approved for smoking cessation. Of the tested e-cig users, 12% never were smokers, 30% were only experimental smokers or non-smokers, 33% were non-daily or current smokers and 9% were daily current smokers, as compared to 53%, 19%, 14%, and 4%, for those that had never used e-cigs before, respectively.
